Green Profit is a not-for-profit initiative of BECO Environmental Management, a cleaner production consultancy company based in the Netherlands, Belgium and South Africa. For more info on BECO, please click here.

The GreenProfit system is based on the Dutch-language version "Milieu & Winst" (Environment and Profit), which has been on-line successfully in the Netherlands and Belgium since 1 January 2000. It is a cooperative effort of organisations including the Dutch Centre for Environmental Licensing (InfoMil), the Public Waste Council of Flanders (OVAM), the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) and the cleaner production teams of all Dutch provinces. The Dutch language system contains over 1050 cleaner production measures and 100 examples of their application in industry, and this amount continues to grow. In comparison, GreenProfit in its initial stage features only 120 measures and 9 case studies. The current site is therefore a demo version of what it aspires to become. With the support of financing agencies and partner organizations, GreenProfit should soon live up to its full potential.

What is cleaner production?

On GreenProfit, cleaner production reflects the preventive approach to environmental issues, such as resource-use reduction, waste elimination or reduction, eliminating toxic and dangerous raw materials, etc. While resource-oriented preventive measures and internal reuse of materials and resources fall within the definition of cleaner production, approaches such as waste separation and external recycling do not.

In many cases, preventive measures generate financial benefits in the process. This explains the double focus on environment and economics, or "green" and "profit".

Cleaner production also goes by the name of pollution prevention or P2. The associated hardware is referred to as cleaner technology or clean technology.
